Telephone HMRC

Debt management

HMRC is sending voice prompts to some customers, explaining what you need to do if you’re behind with your payments. Customers will receive these as an inbound phone call to landline and mobile phones. They will give details for paying HMRC, or a helpline number for you to contact.

HMRC is also sending messages that give advice about how important it is to make payments using the correct information.

The messages will not ask for any personal or financial information.

Road hauliers survey

Between August 2021 and 31 October 2021, the independent research agency IFF Research, will carry out interviews to understand more about the readiness and experiences of road hauliers moving goods between the United Kingdom and the European Union and between the Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

You may get a telephone call from IFF Research to invite you to take part. HMRC encourage you to do so as it will help us to understand how to support road hauliers in preparing for future customs arrangements.

Taking part is voluntary, and if you do take part, all responses will be confidential and any information you give will be used for research purposes only.

Labour market research into types of contracts

Between 1 June 2021 and 31 December 2021, HMRC will work with an independent agency called IFF Research. This research will try to find out:

  • how common it is for individuals in the UK workforce to have certain kinds of casual employment
  • which sectors of the economy have certain kinds of casual employment and where they are most commonly found

You may get a phone call from IFF Research to tell you about the research and invite you to take part. If you need any more information, you can contact IFF Research.

VAT returns communications campaign ― research with businesses

From 15 October 2021 until 10 December 2021, HMRC will be working with Kantar Public and Roots Research.

These independent research agencies are recruiting VAT registered businesses who have not yet signed up to Making Tax Digital. They are asking these businesses to take part in research HMRC are conducting.

You may receive a phone call from these agencies inviting you to take part in a research interview with a social researcher from HMRC.

The research aims to understand businesses’ views on various letters that may be sent out. These letters are part of a communications campaign on changes to VAT record keeping.

We encourage you to take part in this research to help improve communications that will be sent to customers. If you do take part, your answers and any information you give will be confidential and only used for research purposes.
